Neighborhood Center

Projected Completion: Fall, 2008

Overview

The existing building in City Park is in dire need of repair. And the community is in need of a Neighborhood Center. Our goal is to create a center for the benefit of children, seniors and local non-profits by improving the existing building.

It is essential that any improvements maintain the historically significant characteristics of the current structure. To that end, Judy has come up with a unique concept. The current building's style is best categorized as "Monterey Revival". One of it's main distinguishing characteristics is the balcony - so no alterations should effect it. That pretty much rules out expanding the existing building. However, one other characteristic of Monterery Revival architecture is that buildings often appear togethor in a compound with a central courtyard. So Judy has proposed building a new, one-story building approximately 30 feet in front of the existing building and creating a courtyard between them!

The design for the building is very simple and sturdy. It features unique folding "Nana Doors" that will create fifteen foot wide walls of glass on either side of the building. These doors can be fully opened to create a walk-through layout, or left closed and the building will still be almost see-through! The design will also support roll-down metal doors to protect the glass when not in use.
